CARTERTON
ST. MARY’S CHURCH. AN EXCELLENT IRISH CONCERT. ("Times-Age” Special.) Last night the King’s Theatre, Carterton, was well filled when the annual St. Patrick's concert and dance was held. A first-class concert programme was arranged and those responsible are to be warmly congratulated in connection therewith. The first item was given by the Convent School children, a company song which was excellently rendered. As an encore number they gave “Trade Winds,” a verse speaking item. The Featherston juvenile performers provided a very fine presentation of a military ballet and “Little Old Lady,” both items being well received and deservedly applauded. An excellent display of toe dancing was given by Miss Jocelyn Broad, Masterton. Songs by Mr Don Irvine and Mrs Vanderpump, of Waihakeke, were splendid items. The latter sang “When Irish Eyes are Smiling,” and was very warmly applauded. A Russian dance by Valmai Price, of Masterton, was so well performed that she had to respond to a recall. This also was the case with Kathleen Dallas, of Masterton, when she gave a toe dance. A tap dance by Barbara Davies, of Featherston, was also well received. After an interval of ten minutes, Messrs Rogers and Philpott, of Wellington, presented Assheton Harbord’s Pierrot concert party .and the efforts of the party provided excellent entertainment. Although encores were called for these could not be given owing to the lengthy halftime programme. Every item was loudly applauded. The funny anecdotes brought down the house. Although all the items were excellent perhaps the best ntimber was the Irish Jig by Joy Wilson, whose dancing was a revelation and worth going a long way to see. The Kerry dance by Adele Edmonds was also outstanding. The following items Were given in the second half: The party, “Hello Everybody;” “The Pride of Tipperary,” Lawrence Harrington; “Mickey,” Marjorie Whittington; “A Fine Old Irish Gentleman,” Assheton Harbord; “Achal by the Sea,” Ina Small; “Gilhooley’s Gramaphone,” John Brown and the party; “Macushla,” Bob Hutchinson; “A Little Bit of Heaven,” Gordon Morley; “The Irish Janitor,” Asheton Harbord: “Miss Emereld Isle,” Ina Small.: John Brown and Bob Hutchinson, in a funny sketch entitled, “The Railway Station;” “Old Irish Mother,” a splendid item well given by Lawrence Harrington and the party; “Erenalia,” by the party. The concluding item, “Macnamara’s Band” was a fitting finale by Gordon Morley and the party, to a high class programme. The concert was one of the .best staged in Carterton for a long tiniei After the concert the hall was cleared’for dancing and a happy time was spent until 2 a.m. to music supplied by Tom Udy’s Dance Bsnd. Supper on a lavish scale was .provided in the supper-room. Those responsible for the concert and dance should be delighted with the response from the public. The first set went in favour of the challengers 6/5, and second and third to the holders, 6/3, 6/0 in each case.
