LAKE FERRY HOTEL BROKEN INTO. MONEY AND ARTICLES STOLEN. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Lake Ferry hotel was broken into late on Saturday evening or early on Sunday morning. An entrance was obtained by breaking a pane of glass in the front door leading to the bar and by this means the burglar was able to unlock the door. A sum of money, important papers and other articles were taken. The matter is being investigated by the police. Maoris Visit Hastings. A party of Maoris from here and Martinborough left for Hastings yesterday. Personal. Elders Handy and Allen are, on a visit to the district. Lake Closed. It is expected that the outlet of the lake will be opened this week. w Motor Accident. While passing another motor vehicle on Sunday in the vicinity of the Pirinoa store, Mr D. Todd had a miraculous escape from serious injury. He swerved too far oft' the road and in attempting to right his car it capsized. Mr Todd escaped with a shaking. The car was not badly damaged. Eels Netted in Large Numbers. Eels are being netted at the Lake Ferry in large numbers. The belief held by some that eels migrate to the ocean to spawn does not altogether coincide with the belief of the Maoris. Eels which are described as females by the authorities are at present “runoing” and the outlet is still closed. These eels “run” until the new moon of this month when the “run” ceases. Maoris are of the opinion that the eels migrate from their different haunts to he salt water and there shed their ova and return again to where they came f rom. This contention is certainly substantiated by the fact that in some years the lake is not opened until well after the “run” of eels has finished. Surely eels do not wait about the Lake Ferry in millions for the lake to open. r t is admitted, however, that eels do io out into the ocean and that has been proved when the season is on and the lake is opened at that time,
