GREYTOWN
LEAGUE OF MOTHERS. TRAINING OF INFANT CHILDREN. ("Times-Age” Special.) The members of the Greytown League of Mothers held their first meeting of the: year in St. Luke’s Parish Hall yesterday, Mrs Bull presiding over a fair attendance of members. The meeting opened with the League hymn. Mrs Bull asked members to stand in sympathy with those members who had suffered bereavement; also with those who are in hospital at the present time.
Mrs T. G. R. Ingley contributed two songs and Mesdames Robinson and York duets.
The Rev. R. Byers from Carterton, gave a very interesting address on the training of children from infancy. He stressed that it was between the ages of 1 year and 5 years that the true character of the child was moulded. Children should be taught discipline in the home and should also receive religious teaching. It should not be left to school teachers and the clergy to train the children. He was accorded a hearty ’vote of thanks on the motion of Mrs Bull. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Bull, Wiggins, Knell and Johnson. / • SCHOOL COMMITTEE. WINNERS OF SWIMMING CUPS. The monthly meeting of the Grey? town District High School Committee was held last evening, there being present: Messrs H. G. Carter (chairman), F. Dennes (treasurer), E. Graham, J. Herod, H. C. Trotman, H. Bassett, W. G. K. Wiggins and Mrs Knell (secretary). The acting headmaster ( Mr G. S. Maloney) was also present. The headmaster’s report stated that the roll numbers were: Primary, 294; secondary, 42. The following swimming certificates have been qualified for this season: Primary: 25yds., 30; 50yds., 9; 100yds., 10- 220yds., 6; 440yds., 6. Secondary: 25yds., 2; 50yds., 1; 100yds., 1; 220yds., 5; 440yds., 1; 880yds., 5; total, 76. Mrs C. F. Duff had donated two cups for those showing the most improvement in the learners section. These have been awarded to G. Ingley and Leslie Murray. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Duff for her donation of the cups. The committee placed on record its appreciation of the splendid work done by the staff in fostering first aid, swimming and athletics during February. Mr Maloney was asked to convey the resolution to the staff. It was decided to procure two blankets for the use of children who become sick at school. The chairman, and treasurer were authorised to operate on the school’s saving bank surplus account. A sample paper lunch bag was received from Mr B. Roberts, M.P. The cost of same is to be ascertained. The dental department advised that Nurse M .M. Grocott had been appointed to act in a supervisory capacity. ’ , Mr Maloney suggested several alterations to the benches in the laboratory, and these suggestions were agreed to. Diggers’ Party. The Greytown “Diggers”; will hold their second annual party on Friday night. Personal Items. Mrs C. Bensemen, of Moroa, and Miss Jean Bensemen, of Masterton, have returned from a holiday spent at Napier. Mr K. Nix,-of the W.F.C.A. staff, left today for a fortnight’s holiday to be spent in the Marlborough Sounds.
