MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council it was reported that the following building permits had been issued since last meeting:—Tararua Electric Power Board, Main Street, alterations, £95; Mrs W. G. Wattereus, Bright Street, additions, £5O. A letter was received from the Masterton County Council relative to the centennial celebrations and memorials. The Mayor stated that he had attended several conferences of the combined Wairarapa local bodies and at one of the meetings it had been decided that each body contribute towards the renovation of the Maori meeting house at Papawai. 'The Borough’s share for this was £5. Apart from the Provincial Memorial at Petone it was proposed that each local body in the province could have its own Centennial memorial if it so desired. These memorials would carry a small Government subsidy. It was decided by. the council to hold the matter over until next meeting and in the meantime the council would appreciate suggestions being made in connection with the proposal. A deputation consisting of Messrs A. H. Herbert and S. Daniel, representing the Eketahuna Returned Soldiers’ Association, waited on the Council in respect of the War Memorial Tablet .erected behind a door in the Women’s Rest Room. This was not considered a suitable place for the memorial. It was eventually decided that the original committee consisting of Messrs W. Simpson, J. B. Carruthers, A.' H. Herbert and Mrs Albrechtsen, with the addition of Mr B. Dinnan, meet at an early date to go into the matter.
A letter was received from the lessee of the Public Hall asking the Council to repair the drainage at the hall, provide better lighting facilities at the corner of the road and a parking area in the vicinity of the Hall—lt was decided that the first request be agreed to. It was resolved that the Power Board be asked for a quotation for improving the lighting. Cr Ryan stated that both sides of the street, if metalled would provide a suitable area for car parking. It was decided that the Works Committee inspect the site and act on the suggestion if thought suitable. The Mayor stated that the upkeep of the Rest Room was becoming somewhat of a burden. He estimated that the annual upkeep cost was about £l2. It was resolved to write to the Eketahuna County Council asking it tc share the annual upkeep charges on the building on an equal basis.
