GREYTOWN

FIRE BRIGADE MEETING. NOMINATION OF OFFICERS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown Fire Brigade was held in the Fire Station last night. Superintendent J. Wood presided over a full attendance of members. The secretary reported that the price from the Power Board for fixing a siren on the tower was £l6. It was decided to have this work done immediately. Mr D. James was reappointed to the Brigade, after having been away from the district for some months. The secretary was instructed to write a letter of congratulation to the Carterton Brigade on their success at the recent demonstration held at Wanganui. Firemen K. Longford and C. Brunton were appointed joint custodians of the fire station. Mr A. G. Rhodes was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his generous action in fixing the siren on the motor free of cost. The following were nominated for office for the ensuing year: Superintendent J. Wood (reelected); Deputy W. Wood (reelected); Station Officers: W. Gray and G. Gray; Foreman: B. Workman; Ist motor driver: K. Longford, C. Brunton, G. Rhodes; treasurer: W. Wood; secretary: H. G. Carter; auditors: H. J. Nightingale and J. F. Wallis. The Superintendent of the Greytown Brigade explained to the new members the rules and procedure in reference to taking brigade equipment outside the Borough in case of fire. The Superintendent stated that the Brigade would'at all times render assistance where possible, but permission must first be secured from the Controlling Authority. Furthermore, adequate equipment for fire fighting must always be left within the Borough. FITNESS CAMPAIGN. CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES. Although the fitness campaign was not taken up by the citizens generally, the school children have made up for this. Following a month of intensive swimming and life saving instruction a sports meeting will be held on Monday next. The whole school is divided into House teams and the rivalry between the various teams is very keen. One House, the Moa’s, who had a strong team of swimmers, are liable to have their colours lowered at the sports on Monday as the “Tui’s” and “Kiwi.’s” are training hard. The staff of the school is to be congratulated on the energy and interest taken in the present campaign. Personal Items. Mr S. Brice was a visitor to Wellington yesterday for the test cricket match. Mr G. Scrimgeour has returned from a holiday spent at Eastbourne. Mr M. Greathead has left on a motor tour of the North Island.
