CARTERTON
FIRE BRIGADE TEAM. WARM WELCOME HOME. (•'Times-Age” Special.) A civic welcome was tendered by the Mayor, councillors and citizens of Carterton last evening to the champion fire brigade team which had, during the past week, competed successfully at the New Zealand fire brigade competitions held in Wanganui. The team, arrived home quietly on Sunday and the Mayor arranged a civic welcome to the team. In conjunction with the Mayor, the president of the Tradesmen’s Association also shared the honours. The function was arranged for 5.15 p.m. and at that time a call was made on the siren, the result of which brought many citizens to the fire station. The fire engine was drawn out from the station and upon it the valuable shields won at the demonstration were displayed for public view. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, mounted the running board of the fire engine, and said: “We have met here to warmly welcome home and congratulate Carterton’s champion fire brigade team, who have just come back from the demonstration held at Wanganui. Everyone must indeed be pleased to know that by their successes at Wanganui the Carterton Fire Brigade were the champions of New Zealand. We all knew the Carterton firemen were efficient in their work, so are other brigades, but Carterton by their competition work were more efficient than the others.” The result was outstanding, he said. Since the advent of the high pressure water service, this was the second time the Carterton brigade had achieved the honour of being the champion brigade of New Zealand. This success was all the more meritorious when it is realised they were in competition with 47 teams from all parts of New Zealand. On behalf of himself, the borough councillors and the burgesses of Carterton, he extend* ed hearty congratulations to the team. (Cheers).
Mr J. A. B. Lawrence, president of the Carterton Tradesmen’s Association, added his congratulations on behalf of the business people of Carterton. It was a wonderful achievement and the brigadesmen were to be complimented upon their success. Although a volunteer brigade, it was not saying too much to remind his audience that the Carterton brigade had been always efficient and that was always demonstrated when their services were required, in fact they were 365 days efficient. On behalf of Carterton tradesmen he offered sincere congratulations to the team and as far as fitness was concerned Carterton firemen were 100 per cent. The Mayor then called for three cheers which were lustily given. Messrs H. Matson, J. Churchouse, Geo. Steffert and Archie Clark comprised the successful team. They mounted the fire engine and Fireman H. Matson who was captain of the team thanked the Mayor and Mr Lawrence lor their kind remarks and the people who had assembled to honour their success which they were very proud z to have achieved. (Cheers).
