CENTRAL SCHOOL

meeting of committee. DELAY IN REMODELLING BUILDING. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Central School Committee was held last night, the chairman, Mr J. E. MeV. Calwell, presiding. All members were present except Mr Beecroft. The secretary was directed to write to the Wellington Education Board upon various matters of repair lequiiing attention. The headmaster, Mr E. G. Coddington, submitted a very satisfactory report of attendance and progress of the children, the total roll number being 580. The average attendance was Central 481, Side 73, percentage 96 and 97 respectively. It was expected that before the end of the year a total of 600 will be reached. In consequence of the continued hot weather full use had been made of the swimming baths and the headmaster recommended that a certificate should be provided for beginners who swam across the baths for the first time, the present limit for certificates being 50yds. It was decided -to procure the certificates as suggested. Comment was made in regard to delay in remodelling the School, especially in view of the recent good weather. The accommodation for the stafi was very unsatisfactory. During Fitness Week the school combined with others in the celebrations and the band made a good impression on that occasion. The headmaster intimated that it was proposed to have a display of handwork at the Centennial Exhibition and that the schools of Masterton should combine to have a display in Masterton Municipal Hall in August. For this purpose if would be necessary to obtain some material. The headmaster was authorised to procure what he considered necessary. The thanks of the committee were expressed to the teachers in the East School for their gratuitous work in varnishing the desks at the school. It was decided to authorise the headmaster to install battery telephones for internal school use at his discretion.
