GAYDA ON THE POLICY OF THE DEMOCRACIES ARMAMENTS NO LONGER DEFENSIVE. COMMENT ON BRITISH ESTIMATES By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received This Day, 10.10 a.m.) ROME, March 5. “Everything proves that the democracies are heading more rapidly towards war. Their armaments are losing a defensive character and assuming openly an offensive one,” writes Signor Virgino Gayda in the "Voce D’ltalia.” He adds: "The fact that, for the first time in history, her air estimates transcend the navy’s, justifies the beliefjthat Britain is preparing to transport troops to the Continent. We have no need worry over the astronomical estimates which Britain is able to afford from the wealth derived from her Empire which she denies to others. They prove that Mr Neville Chamberlain’s formula of negotiated peace is changing to peace by intimidation. When the war magazines are filled, Britain s tone will harmonise less with the pipes of peace.”
