An interesting legal point, said to have been raised only once before in New Zealand, resulted in the rejection of a garden hose case by the magistrate, Mr H. Morgan, of Ashburton. An inspector had been in the habit for years of getting a justice of the peace, who is also a member of the borough council, to sign summonses. The magistrate held that it was illegal, as the justice of the peace was a member of a body which benefited by the penalties imposed. N. V. Edwards Farewelled. The young railways draughtsman, N. V. Edwards, who won the New Zealand tennis singles championship this season and is now going overseas as a member of the New Zealand Davis Cup team, was farewelled by the head office staff of the Railways Department yesterday. The General Manager, Mr G. H. Mackley, presided over a gathering of nearly 200. In acknowledging the gift of a wallet, Mr Edwards said he had received the fullest encouragement from Mr Mackley and the other heads of the department. “I will keep fit and do my best in the coming matches,” Mr Edwards said, “for I will feel that I am playing not for myself but for the whole Dominion.” Social Security Tax. It is authoritatively stated that wages or other income paid from the time the Social Security Act corner into operation on April 1, even though they may cover a prior period, will be. subject ro the tax under the legislation of Is in the pound. Taxation is paid, according to this authority, at the rate in force at the time of the payment of wages ,salary, etc. No apportionment is therefore permissible whereby that part of the sum representing services contributed before April 1 would be assessed for taxation at the Employment Act rate of 8d in the pound and thereafter at the social security rate. April 1 falls on a Saturday. Though weekly wages and salaries paid on that day will therefore be subject in full to the social security tax, if in pursuance of practice they are paid on the Friday or an earlier day in the week they will be subject only to the 8d in the £l. Some concerns end their wages week on days other than Saturday or Sunday.
