EARLY MORNING FIRE

WORKSOP ROAD RESIDENCE GUTTED. GOOD WORK BY BRIGADE. Fire swept through an eight-roomed residence at the corner of Worksop Road and Dixon Street, owned and occupied by Mr Charles Perry, at an early hour this morning. The Masterton Fire Brigade received a call at 1.25 a.m. and on arrival found the house well ablaze with the flames breaking through the roof at the rear of the building. Under ths direction of Superintendent T. B. Clark, however, the brigade made a smart save and soon had the outbreak under control. The kitchen, where it is thought the fire started, was badly gutted and the contents severely damaged. The remaining rooms and their contents were damaged by heat and water. The fire attracted a, large crowd. The house was insured for £l2OO and the contents for £BOO. Mr Perry stated this morning that he could not account for the cause of the outbreak. Owing .to the illness of Miss A. Perry, he was sleeping at the home of a neighbour and his son, Mr E. Perry, was sleeping in a batch at the rear of the house. About 9 o’clock last night Mr Perry went into' the house and then locked up for the night. Everything then appeared to be normal. Among the contents destroyed were many photographs of Wairarapa cricket and football teams, some of them 40 and 50 years old. These were greatly prized by Mr Perry, who feels their loss badly.
