Joe Louis’s manager announced today that the champion will meet Tons’ Galento in a 15-round title bout in New York in the last week of June. Observers generally have been exceedingly sceptical of the ability of the rotund ex-bartender, who contends that he trains on beer, to give Louis a good fight. Louis’s manager agreed reluctantly to the match only after an assurance that Galento’s Italian supporters would guarantee a profitable crowd.
