RELIC PRESERVED

HOME OF FRENCH AUTHOR. A house where Chateaubriand lived from 1807 to 1818, “La Valee aux Loups,” in the Commune of Chatenay, near Sceaux, nine miles from Paris, has just been put under the protection of the national trust. “Of all the things I have lost,” said Chateaubriand, “ ‘La Valee aux Loups’ is the only one that I regret.” It was here that the famous author wrote “Les Martyrs” and the first part of his “Memoires d'OutreTombe.” The house has a portico with two columns of black marble and two cariatides, which were added at the time. The park of 35 acres, where Chateaubriand. planted the rarest trees, at a cost of more than 150,000 francs, is still flourishing, its cedars of Lebanon and other fine trees greatly admired.
