SUCCESS OF LIMOND FILLIES

<By

“The Cynic.”)

Shrill, grandam of Nora Gfegor and Ivar, won good races, including the W.R.C. Thompson Handicap and W.R.C. Suburban Handicap. Besides High Art, Shrill produced Father’s Voice, who defeated The Hawk. The Night Patrol, Heroic, etc., in the V.A.T.C. Caulfield Futurity Stakes, and who was a good winner in New Zealand. High Pitch, winner of the A/R.C. Railway Handicap, and W.R.C. Parliamentary Handicap, was also from Shrill, and Valvate (grandam of Movie Star, winner of the A.J.C, Breeders’ Plate) is another of her progeny. Improved. Happy Heels is one of the most improved horses at Trentham at present. His trainer, H. B. Lorigan, believes that this is due in large measure to a course of schooling he has been given on off days. He is a splendid jumper for later on if he still fails on the flat. A Winning Line. Golden Sheila comes from a winnerproducing family, for her dam, Madam Ruth (by Lackham) is out of Lady Marie, dam also of the winners Gay Sheila, Gay Blonde, Gay Sheik and Marie’s Acre. », Backed and Beaten. Rival Hit was surprisingly well backed to beat Spear Chief in the Flying Handicap at Rosehill oh February 4, says a Sydney correspondent, but the Winning Hit gelding ran a miserable race, showing no pace nor any justification for his backing. He looked well enough in spite of an absence from racing of several months, but apparently he has not recoveted altogether from the injury he received when he fell over oh the roads in the spring. Daughter of Civility. March Easy, who contested the maiden events at Wanganui, is a three-year-old daughter of Nightmarch and that brilliant Elysian—Civilisation mare Civility, one of the best sprinters and rnilers of her day in the colours of Mr Speed, with success on most of the metropolitan courses, including the Auckland Easter. At the stud Civility has been an unlucky mare, and it remains to be seen if March Easy can turn the tide. Not Decided Yet. An Easter programme for Beaulivre has not been announced, but his owner, Mr W. Higgins, has the choice of Auckland and Christchurch. Beaulivre is engaged in the Champagne Stakes at Auckland, and in the Champagne ,Stakes and the Challenge Stakes at Riccarton. Mr Higgins has another Beau Pere youngster in Bel Oiseau, at present trained at Randwick, and there was a possibility some time ago that Bel OiSeau might be brought back for the Champagne Stakes at Auckland, and that Beaulivre might go to Riccarton. Riverton Woman Owner. Mrs A. E. McLaren, owner of Passaform, and the dam Fairform, has three more of Fairform’s progeny to carry her colours later. A two-year-old filly by Pink Coat will shortly be raced, and a yearling colt by Night Raid is being handled by A. J. Peart at Riverton, while a colt foal by Salamagundi is at present running on Mrs McLaren's property at Riverton. In addition to Passaform, Mrs Me- 1 Laren also races Turaki, a big four-year-old gelding by Balboa from Divinal, dam of Golden Lap. He is trained by Peart and is destined later for hurdle racing.

Another Trip. Mr W. Higgins, of Wellington, will be leaving on another trip to England next week. While in Sydney he may make arrangements for the transfer, of his two-year-old Beau Pere —Joybird colt Bel Oiseau. already a winner, to the Dominion for racing at Ellerslie at Easter.

Not Expected. J. Fryer brought off a 100 to one chance at the recent Williamstown meeting, when Gay Circle won the Apprentices’ Plate, No horse could have been less fancied than Gay Circle (says the “Australasian”). He has been causing his trainer, J. Fryer, a lot of anxiety of late. He was lame on the tracks during the week, he was lame before the race, and he was lame after it, but nevertheless he won, and won well. Before the race, a friend asked Fryer whether Gay Circle had a chance, and Fryer replied: “Well, he is in the race.” Gay Circle is a six-year-old bay 1 horse by Gay Shield from Nucleus, and is owned by Mr G. J. Barton.

A Wanganui Winner. Pearl of Asia, a Wanganui winner, is a bay daughter of Limond and the imported Polymelus mare Aspic, hence she is a full-sister to Tout le Monde and Icing and a half-sister to Aspian and Edible. She is owned by Mr E. J. .Kirkwood, of Stratford, who paid 275 guineas 'for her at the yearling sales, and she is -now a member of T. R. George’s stable at Trentham. Her effort was the more attractive as she carried 7.'.1b overweight. 'Fillies by Limond thus won both juvenile events at the meeting, for Varimond was victor on the first day. Cheap Horse. Le Marquis carries the same colours as last month’s big-dividend payer at Trentham, Gold Glare, those of Mr B. La Pouple, of Hawera, who does his own training. He is a four-year-010 bay son of Lord Quex and the Greyspear —Lady General mare Lady Gen, a member of an Australian family that has not had, particular success in recent years.-though Lady General herself was a useful perfortner in the Dominion over a decade ago. Mr La Pouple secured this horse at the 1936 yearling sales for only 30 guineas. Brother to Convivial. Mr H. A. Rhind has had no horse to carry his colours for some time, but they will be seen again in a few months. He has acquired the three-year-old Lord Warden —Jazz Girl gelding, brother to Convivial and half

brother to Plumage, and he joined Plumage in P. McGrath’s stable this week. McGrath broke him in last year, when he attracted attention as a young horse of some promise, and he is in good order now to start on a preparation, having done well during his spell. Plumage has thrived on the treatment she has had lately, and useful track gallops, following a good effort when placed at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting this month suggest that she will be a winner before long. Another Jumper. Jewish Lad is the latest horse al Riccartoh to be tried as a jumper. A year ago he looked as if he was on the w’ay to useful form on the flat, but he has not made the progress that was expected, so his trainer, D. Cotton, has decided to try him-in the other department. Ridden by R. Register, he was schooled over four brush hurdles recently and gave a creditable display. The Wrecker. The Wrecker has not been in training since he returned with Royal Chief from Australia some time ago, but F. D. Jones is using the Shambles geld* ing as a hack at present. The Wrecker is big z and well, and will be in good condition to undergo another preparation. For Trentham. MoorSotis, winner of the Middle Park Plate at Riccarton and the Hopeful Handicap at Dunedin, may have his next race in the North Island Challenge Stakes, run at weight-for-age over seven furlongs at Trentham next month. His raee on the first day will be among the two-year-olds in the Pacific Handicap. Moorsotis will have his hardest test to date in the Challenge Stakes, but may be equal to a good effort if he is not bustled too much over the early stages. It looks only a question of his remaining sound to win many good races, as with more experience he should develop into a smart horse.
