FEATHERSTON

FIRE AT FERNSIDE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Through the action of some careless smoker on Saturday morning, a fire started on the roadside, adjacent to the oak drive at “Fernside.” The fire quickly spread across the dry grass paddocks. Fortunately a small band of men, Messrs McTaggart, Bert Tyer and Ted Mellish were able to keep the flames from the drive, although they reached within a few feet of it in places. A water race prevented the fire from spreading towards the homestead. Farewell. Last Friday night about 30 business people and friends of Mr W. J. McGill met to bid him farewell prior to his departure for Napier. The Mayor, Mr W. J. Card, presided, and the DeputyMayor, Mr M. B. Tate, was also present. Several speakers spoke feelingly of the departure from Featherston of such splendid citizens as Mr and Mrs McGill. On behalf of his friends, Mr McGill was presented by Mr Card with a gold mounted fountain pen, and a gold mounted pencil. Mr McGill, expressed his deep appreciation for the kind action of his friends. A pleasant evening closed with the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” Mr J. Buck being the pianist. Rifle Shooting. Ten shoots at each of two 800yds shoots were fired at the Gum Grove range on Saturday afternoon in bright sunshine in a competition for the McGill Shield and R. Donald trophy. Scores were as under: —

Personal. Mr J. V. Reed, of Tauherenikau, who, for some months, has been ill in the Masterton Hospital, has sufficiently recovered to be able to return home on Saturday afternoon. Mr D. Carlyon has returned from a holiday spent at the Sounds. Lost Purse Recovered. Last Sunday night, a young lady school teacher of this district left her purse containing about £3 in money, in a rail car. On ringing the Featherston station on Monday morning she was delighted to receive the reply that the purse and its contents were in the hands of the Railway authorities, and could be obtained on application.
