CARTERTON
PHYSICAL FITNESS CELEBRATION. PROCESSION ON SATURDAY. ("Times-Age’’ Special.) Carterton was en fete on Saturday afternoon when the monster Physical Fitness parada of various organisations took place. The procession proceeded from Halloway Street through High Street and Belvedere Street to the Carterton Showgrounds. Great preparation had been made by the official or~ganisers, Messrs R. T. Forbes and J. Steel, who marshalled the parade. Their organisation and control of the function spoke for itself. At 2 o’clock every branch of sport and organisation were in the parade, which did credit to all who took part. The procession was headed by the Wairarapa Pipe Band, followed by school children, Swimming Club, Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, Cubs, R.S.A., bowlers, cricketers, tennis, hockey, golf and basketball players, women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Young Farmers’ Club, Rugby players, Y.M.C.A. and Women’s Institute, and upon arrival at the Showgrounds the various sports bodies were marched round the oval and picketed in different places on the oval. The National Anthem was sung. An address was given by the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner whose speech was broadcast by means of Mr C. K. Goodin’s sound machine. Mr Taverner said that the act provided for a Physical Welfare and Recreation Committee and this was composed of representatives from the Carterton Borough and the Wairarapa South County Council. The outcome of this committee’s deliberations was the large gathering present representing all sports and other bodies. The object was for a state of National fitness, and the matter was of great importance to all. It started with the individual, for without compulsory training universal fitness was impossible and all sports bodies provided a very pleasant method of securing physical fitness. Everyone should, if possible, be fit in both mind and body, and it was only healthy recreation that pro- ■ vided this result. He asked his hearers to take a lesson from one or other of the sports bodies represented, and to throw in their lot with any one and if they did their job in this respect, ana kept fit and healthy by exercise ail would go well with our country and the nation. (Applause;. Folk dancing, tug-of-war, relay races, a Y.M.C.A. display, a Scout display and other-sports items of interest were included in the afternoon’s programme. CLAY BIRD SHOOTING. .
