SHORTAGE OF TRUCKS
“WORST FOR EIGHTEEN YEARS.” RESULT OF DRY SPELL. In recent weeks repeated complaints have been .made by Wairarapa fat stock buyers regarding their inability to secure anything approaching a sufficient number of sheep trucks. They allege that the Railways Department does not co-operate to the extent it should. One well-known buyer in the South Wairarapa told a “Times-Age” reporter yesterday: “I have been buying sheep and lambs in the Wellington province for the past 18 years and I have never experienced such a shortage of trucks.” When the matter was referred to the Railways Traffic Department in Wellington this morning an official attributed the shortage to the effect of the prevailing dry spell. “Stock,” he said, “is being moved about very freely at present, and the dry spell has accentuated the position. We have the usual number, perhaps a few more, trucks available this season, but we cannot deal with everyone at the same time. We are doing everything possible to help buyers and are running specials and Sunday trains all over the place and are turning over the trucks as quickly as possible. In a few months’ time we will have sheep trucks lying idle."
