DANCING & DRILL
DEMONSTRATION IN QUEEN I STREET I — PHYSICAL FITNESS CAMPAIGN. ARRANGEMENTS FOR TONIGHT'S DANCE. Favoured with a perfect evening a large crowd gathered in Queen Street last night to witness a varied programme arranged by the Physical Fitness Committee. Amplifiers supplied music for the folk-dancing and drill display, and were also useful as a means of keeping the large crowd' beI hind the ropes. ' Messrs F. H. Clift and J. W. T. Jones were in charge of the proceedings. The display opened with an excellent exhibition of rhythmic exercises by Miss R. Edwards and her pupils from Wairarapa College. The drill was carried out in perfect co-ordination, grace and poise, and was thoroughly appreciated by the large audience. Primary school girls then entertained with delightful folk dancing. The children, were dressed in contrasting colours and made a bright spectacle. An excellent display of land-drill and resuscitation was given by a First Aid squad I trained and led by Miss June Hislop. Competent judges described this as being a credit to the girls. The following took part: Misses Doreen Hughes. Gladys Bance, Nola Newton, Constance Thompson, Rae McNaught, Pat Blamires, Marcia Allen, Shona White, Nance Reid, Eileen McKenzie, and the instructor Miss June Hislop. After a much appreciated Scottish number by the St Andrew Society and Piper T. Picket, the evening concluded with a Strathspey and Reel o’ Tulloch. As a fitting final celebration to the Keep Fit Week activities, a novel open air dance is to be held in Queen ; Street this evening from 9 o'clock onwards. Music is to be supplied by the Masterton Municipal Band, and every effort is being made to ensure that this closing function will be an extremely pleasant one. Seats are being placed along the footpaths for the convenience of the dancers, while additional lighting js being installed for the occasion. The committee is indebted to the Wairarapa Electric Power Board for its willing assistance in providing additional lighting.
Messrs J. A. Kennedy, J. H. Kemnitz and W. Green will be in charge of the arrangements. Spectators will assist the committee in charge by standing well clear from the seats. Shop-keep-ers no doubt will be pleased to leave on their lights so as to give further brightness to the scene. The committee gratefully ackowledges a generous donation from Messrs Miller and Davey„ proprietors of the “Dodgems,” ,who agreed to donate onehalf of their takings last Monday evening towards the cost of the Keep Fit Campaign. The amount received from Messrs Miller and Davey was £ll 10s, which sum is of very material assistance in meeting the expenses incurred in connection with the week’s festivities. In acknowledging the donation yesterday, the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan,' expressed keen appreciation of the generosity of Messrs Miller and Davey.
