mcdougal tennis cup. (“Times-Age” Special.) The quarter finals of the handicap singles for the McDougall Cup played by members of the local tennis club resulted as follows: —M. Herangi (10) beat D. Tikao (15). 61/54; N. Hume (15) beat C. Busch (20), 61/55; M. Herangi beat G. Munro, 61/55; N. Hume beat G. Hall, 61/50. The semi-final will be played between N. Hume (15) and S. Thomas (owe 5), M. Herangi having a bye. The result of the final for the Swainson Cup was a win for Thomas and Munro, who defeated T. Hume and R. Guthrie, 6/1. The local club will play Martinborough at the weekend at Martinborough. School Committee Meeting. The local School Committee held its first meeting this year when there were present: Messrs Mclntosh (chairman), Sutton, Duggan, Riwai and Carter. Accounts totalling. £l9 15s were passed for payment. It was decided to hold the school picnic on Friday, February 24. The secretary reported that a heater had been installed in the head teacher’s room. Mormon Church. A parish conference of the members of the Mormon Church will be held at Gladstone at the weekend. Personals. Miss Thompson, Dannevirke, was a visitor here for the weekend. It is understood that Mr Gordon Sutherland, who was recently married, will take up his permanent residence at Whakatomotomo. Mr and Mrs Dustin, Palmerston North, were the guests of Mrs Swainson, Lake Ferry, for a few days. Mr and Mrs Cowan have returned .from Feilding. Mrs W. Hume, Wellington, was a visitor here for a few days. Mr W. Henson, who has been visiting Auckland, has returned home. Mr T. Hobbs, county roadman, has found it necessary to enter a hospital for treatment. Mr Ben Couch, who has been visiting relatives in the South Island, has returned home. Mr and Mrs Sutherland, Wellington, were the guests of Mr and Mrs Gillies, for the weekend. Mrs Niko Hemi and family, of Tologa Bay, are staying with Mr and Mrs R. Piripi. Milk Supply. The supply of milk has considerably dropped as a result of the hot weather. The rain last week, which was accompanied by hail stones, did not in any way benefit the pastures. Maori Visitors. A large contingent of Natives from, the Tologa Bay district arrived here on Saturday evening and were given the usual Maori welcome. Some of the visitors returned home on Monday whilst the remainder will remain here for about three weeks. Popular Win. The win of a locally owned horse at the Canterbury races on Saturday was received there with much enthusiasm. Local racing enthusiasts benefited considerably by the win and the owner, a well-known and popular resident of the district, was the recipient of many congratulatory messages. Message From the Sea. A bottle containing a message was picked up on the beach at the Lake Ferry on Thursday. The message was signed by a Mr Clare who was a passenger by the inter-island boat on January 30. The bottle was picked up by Mrs Riwai, Kohunui, Pirinoa. A Show Bullock. There is grazing on the property of Mr. J. P. McMaster, Waihora, a beautiful specimen of the Shorthorn breed. The bullock is of outstanding type and beautifully proportioned. It is the intention of the owner to exhibit the same at the Centennial Show in Wellington.
