COLONEL J. E. HUME. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NELSON. This Day. Obituary: Colonel J. E. Hume. Colonel J. E. Hume, who was born in India in 1866, was educated at the South Devon Collegiate School and at Oxford. He arrived in New Zealand in 1880 and in 1883 joined lhe Civil Service as a cadet. In I.'TO he joined the Royal New Zealand Artillery. becoming a lieutenmit in if:;io. in 189-1 and 1895 he was in command of the field force of artillery and police in the Urewera C'otinlry. al To Whaiti and Ruatoki, for about six months and received the special Hi.inl'.s of the Government for his service;:. Colonel Hume served in South Al'i'ica with the Second New Zealand Contingent, 19001902. most of the lime with the Royal Field Artillery. Aller undergoing a course of gunnery in England. Colonel Hume was appointed to the command of the New Zealand Permanent Force. An all-round athlete, he was for a time champion oarsman and sculler />i th.- Star Boating (.Tub, Wellington.
