CRISIS IN BELGIUM

RESIGNATION OF CABINET. WITHDRAWAL OF LIBERAL SUPPORT. BRUSSELS, February 9. The Cabinet has resigned as the result of the withdrawal of the Liberal Party’s support, after the appointment of Dr Mertens. Dr Mertens, who was sentenced to death after the war for co-operation with the Germans, was recently appointed by the Government to the Royal Flemish Academy, an action that gave rise to a demonstration by ex-ser-vice men in which the Premier, M. Spaak, was hurt. There were scenes in Parliament regarding the matter, after which a vote of confidence was passed in the Government by 88 votes to 86. There were seven abstentions.
