REQUEST TO TRUST

ENCYCLOPAEDIA WANTED AT COLLEGE. USE OF UNEXPENDED BALANCES. A proposal to give assistance to Wairarapa College for the purchase of an Encyclopaedia Britannica was favourably considered by the Masterton Trust Lands Trust at its meeting last night. The Principal of Wairarapa College, Mr G. G. Hancox, advised that the college was desirous of adding an Encyclopaedia Britannica to the library and asked that the College be allowed to use unexpended balances from free books grants and that the Trust also make a donation towards the cost. The cost was about £43. Mr A. Owen Jones said he had endeavoured to see Mr Hancox before the meeting to ascertain the position in regard to necessitous cases. He understood there was an unexpended balance in hand of £25 16s 3d. That grant had been made by the Trust for meeting necessitous cases. Mr Jones said he understood that Mr Hancox’s view was that the finding of money for necessitous cases was not the Trust’s job, as that money could be obtained from the Government and the Trust money could be spent to better advantage. Mr Jones said the Trust had given that money for a specific purpose and it would have to be sure that all necessitous cases had been met either by the Government or in any other way. He did not think the Trust should give a reply before Mr Hancox had been interviewed as to the position regarding these cases.

Mr R. Krahagen observed that if all necessitous cases had been met ho would favour the expending of the balance for the purpose suggested. Mr J, Macfarlane Laing concurred. If, after the position regarding necessitous cases had been cleared up, and the balance of £25 were made available he considered the college could raise the balance of the money required.“This is the sort of thing we should support,” said Mr Laing, “as it is something that is not obtainable from the Government. We should not make a grant which simply relieves the Government or any other authority of their duty. Our job is to supply or give something that is not obtainable from any other source.” It was decided to hold the matter over until the March meeting, Mr Jones being requested to see Mr Hancox and report to the Trust.
