FEATHERSTON
ANNUAL SCHOOL PICNIC. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. (“Times-Afie” Special.) Under ideal weather conditions the Featherston School held its annual picnic on the Tauherenikau Racecourse yesterday afternoon. Practically the whole of the school children, as well as a large number of parents were present.
The catering arrangements were capably carried out by a committee of ladies, while the sports, were organised by the teaching staff and committeemen.
During the afternoon Mrs Peter Fraser, wife of the Minister for Education, Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., Mr Alex Donald (Board member) and Mrs A. Donald, were welcomed by the Mayoress! Miss Card), who is also chairwoman of the Home and School Association.
A deputation, led by Mr C. C. Kenward, made a request that a new District High School be provided, plans of which had been exchanged, but nothing further had been accomplished. Mr Kenward also urged that milk be provided in the schools. From a parent’s point of view, Mr Jensen spoke of the necessity of a hot water system being provided, as it was most essential that hot drinks should be provided during the winter months.
Mrs Fraser thanked those present for the welcome and hospitality extended to her, and promised that she would do her part by telling her husband of the reasonable requests made. Mr Alex. Donald pointed out the reason for the delay and explained the work carried out by the board and the Education Department. . He said that they were awaiting the roll for 1939 to decide the number of rooms required, nine or ten. He felt sure that the matter would be dealt with immediately. Mr Ben Roberts, after referring to the excellent arrangements made for the picnic and to the enjoyable outing provided, offered his congratulations to Mr C. C. Kenward on his appointment as a Justice of the Peace. Mr Roberts referred to the splendid service Mi’ Kenward had given over 20 years as secretary to the Featherston School Committee. He also paid a tribute to the splendid service Mr Alex. Donald had given on the Education Board. Mr Roberts promised to give his support to the requests made. Personal Items. The Rev. J. T. and Mrs Holland have returned from a motor tour of the North Island. In the list of recently appointed Justices of the Peace is the name of Mr C. C. Kenward, who has for many years been a borough councillor and secretary of the School Committee. Miss Scullin left for the South Island yesterday to attend the Scullin— Bates wedding in Christchurch. MATTHEWS CROQUET CUP. WON BY MRS SAUNDERS. The Matthews Cup, which was competed for by members of the Featherston Croquet Club, has been , won by Mrs Saunders, w’ho defeated Mrs Benton in the final after she had defeated Miss Lyford.
Mesdames Thompson and Benton beat Mrs Johns and Miss Williams in a match for the McKenzie Brooches by 26 to 20.
The B championship will commence on Monday.
