MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL

SEALING OF DALEFIELD ROAD. UNEMPLOYMENT SUBSIDIES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided at the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council, held last night. Others present were: Councillors C. J. DeLacey, L. M. Clarke, E. McKenzie, C .Stevens. W. Hart, J. Udy and R. A. Copeland. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors H. Mortensen and O. Wolters.

The treasurer reported that cash received in the District Fund Account since last meeting amounted to £l4ll 8s 3d, and for the period April 1. 1938 to January 26 receipts totalled £4375 2s 7d, as compared with £4979 Ils 7d for the corresponding period of the previous year. Since April 1 expenditure amounted to £7360 13s lid, as against £6679 9s lOd for the same period of the previous year. The bank credit balance stood at £B4O Ils 4d as compared with £914 17s. Receipts in the Gas Account since April 1 totalled £2783 19s 2d, as compared with £2883 17s 2d for the same period of the previous year. Expenditure amounted to £2704 14s lid, as compared with £2797 11s, and the bank credit balance was £526 8s 8d as against £553 8s 6d. Accounts amounting to £11648 14s Id were passed. Wright .Stephenson and Co., Ltd., were granted a licence to sell stock at the Carterton saleyards. “It is a reasonable way to spread the cost,” remarked the Mayor, when referring to the council’s allocation of £73 4s towards the upkeep of the Wellington Provincial Court at the Centennial Exhibition. The council decided to pay half of its allocation as suggested. Mr A. F. Briant wrote resigning as custodian of the town clock. Mr M. Worsfold was appointed to the vacancy.

The Masterton County Council advised that the council’s allocation of heavy traffic fees for the past quarter was £49 17s 4d, as compared with £44 4s Id for the previous quarter.

A letter was received from the Wairarapa P. and A. Society thanking the council for making a rebate of £5 on the water rates owing in respect of the Showgrounds. It was resolved to accept the offer of the Wairarapa South County Council to seal Dalefield Road from Lincoln Road to the main highway. The borough will contribute half of tne total.cost of £450.

The Department of Labour wrote stating that it might be found necessary to curtail the liberal subsidy paid to men employed under scheme No. 10. /is a result all such works should be completed by March 1. Further information was contained in the letter with regard to men whose work had not proved satisfactory. It was decided to pay an annual subscription of £1 Is to the smaller Gas Works Association. Thanks were expressed to the Mayor for doing voluntary legal work in connection with the association.

The Town Clerk, Mr P. A. Cole, stated that rates for the current year were coming in freely. Over 40 per cent had Deen collected, in addition to more than 20 per cent of the arrears. “We hope that we have found one of our main sources of trouble as far as the high pressure is concerned,” remarked the Mayor, “and that is the wastage of water from the 8-inch main below the reservoir.” The Gasworks Committee’s report was read and adopted. It included the acceptance of the tender of Messrs Knutson and Jamieson of £2B 13s for roofing the new engine and exhauster room. It was resolved to apply for £350 from the depreciation fund to cover the cost of the installation and payment of the new plant in the engine room, removal of brick wall and the re-erection of same. <

It was resolved that the fee for itinerant hawkers be £1 and for those taking premises in the borough for six months or under £5. The question of the appointment of an inspector on a commission basis for the same was left with the Mayor and Town Clerk with power to act.

The appointment of Mr R. J. Tretheway as assistant water inspector was agreed to. He is to canvas all residences and other places in the borough and ascertain where there are faults and leaky taps and the illegal use of water and report to the Council. The question of water taps outside the borough was left to the Overseer, Mr Rush, to attend to.

It was decided that residents be informed by advertisement of the hosing restrictions that are laid down by the Council and that these restrictions be definitely carried into effect.
