The secretary of the School Committee has been advised that the Department of Education will make a final decision in respect to the number of class rooms to be provided when the school roll for this year is ascertained. The school reopened today for the first term of 1939. The school picnic will be held on Friday at the racecourse. Personal Items. Misses Theo and Helen Scott, of Taihape, have been visiting Pahautea and renewing old acquaintances. Mr and Mrs Frank Stairmand, who have been visiting Mrs J. A. Juno, have returned to Wellington. Mr and Mrs A. S. Kilsby returned yesterday from a holiday spent at Raumati Beach. Mrs P. M. Cade, Pahautea, has returned home after visiting her mother, Mrs Sharp, Lyall Bay. Cricket Match. Matarewa played Pahautea at cricket on Sunday, Pahautea winning by an innings and 101 runs. The visitors were entertained to tea by the Pahautea ladies. Gorse Fires. As a result of gorse fires yesterday afternoon and evening Featherston was enveloped in smoke. Owing to the unsuitable burning weather experienced during the past few years a large area of gorse had made rapid growth and provided excellent cover for rabbits, of which large numbers must have perished in yesterday’s fire.
