RIFLE SHOOTING

MASTERTON-OPAKI CLUB.

BRILLIANT SHOOTING BY H. R. SMITH. The highlight of Saturday’s shooting was the outstandingly brilliant shooting of H. R. Smith who, continuing after scoring a possible at 600yds, compiled 15 consecutive bullseyes, his last shot being a bare whisker out of the bull. With this performance Smith now leads for the Kummer Cup and with good scores at the previous range headed the list for the day. Smith’s total score at 600yds is believed to be a record for the Fairview range, considered by all shooters as a difficult one, and the oldest members have no recollection of an equal performance. R. J. King also compiled a possible, his being at 300yds and, carrying on, added two more.

Conditions could not be considered of the easiest. drifting smoke from burnings-off made visibility somewhat obscure occasionally and at the longest range a slight mirage was in evidence. Scores: —

800yds (single) and 900yds (double). On February 12 the club will defend | possession of the Tansey Shield at Papawai range.
