SIX MILLIONS
HUGE LOSS IN VICTORIAN BUSH FIRES - TIMBER AND FOREST AREAS DESTROYED. HOPES OF PRESERVING MILLING INDUSTRY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE, January 29. Only now are reasonably accurate estimates of the cost to Victoria of the recent bush fires becoming available. Experts estimate .that the value of the timber and forest areas destroyed will reach the staggering total of £6,000,000, but it is thought that by special methods about half of this may be saved, thus preserving the milling industry for at least 20 years. Survey claims already lodged by fire losers indicate that the total is likely to be £1,000,000. At least 5000 claims are expected for the replacement of houses, buildings, stock, furniture and personal effects. The relief funds now total £160,000 and more is coming in.. Insurances cover about £350,000. The return of hot weather resulted in an outbreak of fire in the Dandenong ranges today, destroying four weekendhouses. Several men had narrow escapes.
