Because of the moulting season eggs are becoming scarce in Wellington and a further rise in prices of 2d a dozen for all grades occurred this week. Specials are now retailed at 2s 2d a dozen, A grade Is lid a dozen, and B grade Is Bd. "Eggs will become very dear,” said a retailer, “and the shortage will continue till the end of the moulting season.” N.Z. Standard Time Lowered.

At a meeting held by the Dannevirkc Amateur Athletic and CyclingClub there was an exceptionally large attendance to witness the special invitation three-ciuarter s mile short limit handicap race, in' which Pullar (scr) was matched against the Dannevirke champion long-distance runner, R. Longley (40yds). Pullar ran an exceptionally well-judged race in 3.7 3-5, lowering the New Zealand standard of 3.9. It is the intention of the Dannevirke club to apply for Pullar’s time to be recognised as a New Zealand record for the distance. No Comment on Politics.

Lord Strabolgi considers that as a guest -in New Zealand he would be ill-advised to comment on internal politics. “I have nothing whatever to say about your domestic politics now, or at any other time,” he said in an interview in Christchurch. “7 am a guest here and do not propose to make any sort of comment on the politics of your Government.” As Commander the Hon J. M. Kenworthy. Lord Strabolgi was for many years a Labour member of the House of Commons.

Swimming Record Broken. Swimming over the distance alone in order to retain her 100yds intermediate backstroke title, Miss Joyce McDonald, Southland registered the remarkable time of 1.14 1-5, to beat the existing record of 1.17 1-5 at the New Zealand junior and intermediate swimming championships, which were continued in Rotorua last night. Miss R. Stackpoole, Auckland, created the previous record. Miss McDonald also beat her own time of- 1.14 4-5 established in Auckland last week. Her Auckland time was made in salt water and, with such heavy water as in the Blue Bath, her performance was outstanding. Vandalism in Bush Area.

Owing to the actions of certain irresponsible people in lighting fires in the bush area and wilfully damaging gateways, Messrs C. E. Daniell, Ltd., have been forced to close their private road and bush area at Mauriceville West to all forms of unauthorised traffic. The risk of fire, particularly at this time of the year, is tremendous, and every precaution is being taken to prevent damage from this cause. The necessity of observing all possible precautions against fire has been emphasised strongly by the Minister in Charge of State Forests and other responsible authorities. All appeals of the kind have been ignored flagrantly by persons visiting the bush area above-men-tioned, however, and it has, therefore, been decided, as stated, to exclude unauthorised traffic altogether.
