NEW TOWN CLERK
MR J. F. EAMES, OF THAMES APPOINTED. MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL DECISION. Mr J. F. Eames was appointed to the position of Town Clerk by the Masterton Borough Council at its meeting last night. The 76 applicants had been reduced to three, two of whom had a personal interview with the council last night. Mr Eames will probably take up his new duties at the beginning of April.
Mr Eames, who is a married man, aged 45 years, is at present Town Clerk at Thames. He has had 28 years’ experience in local body work and has been in his present position for the past sixteen months. For eleven years he. was Assistant Town Clerk at Christchurch, and on a number of occasions, once for a period of nine months, he was Acting Town Clerk. During that period, the municipal elections and the Municipal Conference took place in Christchurch. During the depression, Mi’ Eames was hon secretary of the Mayor’s Relief of Distress Fund, and in two years he personally interviewed and attended to close on 8,000 callers seeking help from the Mayor of Christchurch. He was also a member of the Christchurch Unemployment Committee and acted as secretary for several years.
For five years Mr Eames was Town Clerk and Treasurer at Lower Hutt, two years Town Clerk at New Brighton, and four years Assistant Town at Lyttelton. He holds the degree of Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Secretaries, and is a foundation member of the New Zealand branch of the International Institute of Accountants. The present Town Clerk, Mr T. T. Denbee, recently resigned after lengthy service.
