The Hon A. Hamilton, Leader of the Opposition, will arrive at Wellington from Invercargill on Tuesday next. Mr L. Siegel, of Wellington, who has been appointed manager of Mac Duff’s, Ltd., arrived in Masterton yesterday. Mr John Harcourt, former manager at Masterton, left today for Christchurch. Mr D. A. (Joe) Todd, son of Mr and Mrs W. A. Todd, of Masterton, has joined the Royal Air Force and is to leave for England by the Tainui, which sails from Wellington on February 1. The Rev A. C. Lawry, who was recently invited to continue his ministry, at the Bryndwr Methodist Church, in the St Albans circuit, Christchurch, for another year, will in April, 1940, complete 55 years in the service of the Methodist Church of New Zealand. Mr Lawry’s first appointment as a probationer in 1885 was to the St Albans circuit.

The Hon W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, loft Wellington for the north by the Limited express last night. In Rotorua ?.iis morning the Minister represented the Government at a civic reception given to' the competitors in the New Zealand intermediate and junior swimming championships. Tonight he will perform the opening ceremony of the contests, which are to take place in the Blue Baths.

The Pion F. Langstone, Minister of Lands, will leave Wellington for Picton this afternoon to visit Marlborough and North Canterbury. He will meet the Piclon Borough Council this evening, will receive a deputation from the Pelorus branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union tomorrow, meet Crown settlers in Blenheim on Friday, and visit Seddon, Ward and Kaikoura on Saturday. Hamner on Sunday, and the Balmoral plantation on Monday. He will go on to Christchurch on Monday evening and expects to return to Wellington on Wednesday morning. The death occurred in' Hastings on Monday of Dr James Alexander Macdonnell. Dr Macdonnell was born in Upper Brameshire, Scotland, in 1855. and graduated from the University of Aberdeen, afterward studying in Edinburgh and London, where he look his M.D. degree. * He came to New Zealand 48 years ago. settling in Westport. Ten years later he was selected from 26 applicants as medical officer of the then newly-formed Hastings and District United Friendly Societies Association, holding that office continuously till his retirement four years ago. Dr Macdonnell served with the New Zealand Army Medical Corps ■ during lhe Great War and became a I member of the medical board, attain-; ing the rank of lieutenant-colonel on his return to New Zealand. |
