APPEAL FOR REFUGEES
RESENTED IN BRITISH CINEMAS. UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF DEMANDS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, January 15. Rioting occurred in many London cinemas during demonstrations against giving 10 per cent of the night’s gross receipts of theatres, cinema and circuses to the Baldwin Refugee Fund. Organised groups shouted, “Winter relief for the unemployed! Britain’s charity should begin at home.” During the showing of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s film appealing for refugees, demonstrators held up traffic in Piccadilly. Several arrests were made during scuffles in the Easl End. Cinemas were picketed and several screens were pelted during the Archbishop's address.
