The victim was Thomas Joseph le Vaillant, aged 59, farmer, Ruarangi. A passenger in the car, Merle Campbell, aged five, whose parents reside in Taipuha, was cut on the head by broken glass. She was brought to the Whangarei Hospital. Mr le Vaillant had been cutting scrub on the Ruarangi-Paparoa Road, about three-quarters of a mile from his farm, and at midday his son Ivan had arrived with their car to bring his father home for lunch. The two youths were able to clamber from underneath the vehicle, and, on lifting it, they found that their father had severe head injuries. Dr S. H. Ward was summoned from Whangarei. but Mr Le Valliant was dead when he arrived.
