FATAL EXPLOSION
RAILWAY WORKER KILLED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, January 10. A. S. Penman, single, aged 39, a railway casual worker, residing in Milton, was killed almost instantaneously in Clarendon this afternoon as the result of an explosion which blew to pieces a shelter shed in which he was working with a companion, C. Watt, who with the exception of a few minor bruises, escaped injury. Messrs Watt and Penman, both casual workers, were in the shelter shed at about 1.45 fitting fuse to caps, Mr Penman, who had an auger in his hand, was walking out of the door of the shed when he tripped and fell, the auger striking a cap and exploding it. There were three or four sticks of eruptite explosive in the shed and these exploded also. Mr Watt holds a certificate for firing explosives and Mr Penman usually worked with him.
