WIN BY CANTERBURY. WELLINGTON CHALLENGE FAILS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRITSCHURCH, January 10. The Wellington women's tennis team challenging Canterbury for the Kathleen jNunneley Casket made a much better showing on the second day of the contest but could not overtake the big lead gained by the defenders yesterday. Hail and rain threatened an early termination to- the match when Canterbury were leading by six rubbers to two and needed only one more set to retain the trophy. Fortunately the weather cleared after an hour’s delay and the contest was able to be concluded with Canterbury winning by eight rubbers to four. On the previous day the home team had won five out of the six matches. The following are the results: — Singles:

Miss T. Poole (Canterbury) beat Miss J. Douthett (Wellington), 6-2, 6-8. Miss E. Plummer (Wellington) beat Miss K. Armstrong (Canterbury), 6-3. 3-6, 6-4. Miss J. Burns (Wellington) beat Miss D. Dickey (Canterbury), 6-3, 6-3. Miss H. Elsom (Canterbury) beat Miss J. Bedford (Wellington), 6-2, 6-3. Doubles. Misses Douthett and Plummer beat Misses Poole and Armstrong, 6-4, 1-6, 8-6. Miss Dickey and- Elsom beat Misses Burns and Bedford, 4-6, 6-3. 6-3. Totals: Canterbury, 8 rubbers, 18 sets, 146 games. Wellington. 4 rubbers. 10 sets, 112 games.
