FEATHERSTON
FIRE BRIGADE MEETING. ("Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Fire Brigade, Superintendent T. Tidswell presided over a large attendance. Mr D. H. S. Riddiford wrote accepting the position of patron to the Brigade. The United Fire Brigades’ Association wrote regarding conditions, etc., for the demonstration and conference to be held at Wanganui in March. During the month a donation of £l4 was received from the Featherston Juvenile Entertainers from the proceeds of a concert held by them. A vote of thanks was passed to the Entertainers and carried by acclamation. Members expressed their high appreciation of the very fine effort and results attained.
Considerable discussion took place in respect to sending a team to compete at the Wanganui Demonstration. As the time for a team to train was now so short and as there is also a lot of work to be done on the new fire engine, it was decided that the Brigade unfortunately would not be in a position to send a team. It was decided to send a delegate to represent the Brigade at the conference, and Deputy-Superintendent Boston was appointed. Fireman V. Fulford made application for a 2-year service bar. It was decided to hold the annual picnic at the racecourse on Sunday, February 5, subject to permission being obtained to'use the ground and to the weather conditions being suitable. Race Taxation. The taxation paid to the Government by the Wairarapa Racing Club in connection with the recent meeting amounted to £4441 19s, made up as follows: —Totalisator tax, £1999 10s sd; dividend tax, £2186 135.; amusement tax, £222 Os 7d; stakes tax, £33 15s. Fall of Hail. A short sharp fall of hail was experienced yesterday afternoon. A strong wind continues to blow and the conditions are anything but seasonable.
