IMPERATIVE DEMAND
MADE ON NATIONALIST AUTHORITIES
ARREST OF MR AND MRS GOLDING IMMEDIATE SATISFACTION SOUGHT. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Day, 10.5 a.m.) LONDON, January 5. In response to initial inquiries the Nationalist authorities refused to discuss with British Consulate officers the arrest of Mr Ernest Golding (British Acting-Consul at San Sebastian) and his wife. Mr C. B. Jerram has been instructed to further demand the immediate production of the charges, and also immediate access to the prisoners, who are confined to a military prison in San Sebastian.
There is no official confirmation of the report that another British Consulate officer, Mr Rattenbury, is confined to his house by the Nationalist authorities. BRITISH INQUIRY ORDERED BY LORD HALIFAX. . INTO ALL CHARGES MADE BY REBELS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.23 a.m.) RUGBY, January 5. In connection with the Consular bag incident it is officially stated that Viscount Halifax has directed that an inquiry shall be held by the British Embassy at Saint Jean de Luz, San Sebastian or Burgos. The inquiry is to be conducted by Mr O. St C. O'Malley, the British Charge D'Affaires at Saint Jean de Luz. Mr C. B. Jerram and Sir Wasey Sterry, formerly Chief Justice in the Sudan and lately Judge of the Supreme Court for Egypt. Judicial and other inquiries into these matters have already been -instituted by the Nationalist authorities, with whom Britain hopes to keep in close touch. A further announcement will be made on the completion of the British inquiry.
