LARGE GATHERING AT PARK OVAL BEAUTIFULLY FINE WEATHER FAVOURS MEETING. PIPING. DANCING AND ATHLETIC EVENTS. Brilliantly fine weather yesterday favoured the Wairarapa Caledonian Society's annual sports gathering on the Masterton Park Oval. The attendance of the public was the largest seen at the society’s gatherings for some years and a splendid programme of dancing, piping, running, cycling and field events kept everyone well entertained. Under the able guidance of the president, Mr J. B. Mac Lean and directors of the Caledonian Society, assisted by officials of the .Masterton Amateur Athletic Club and Wairarapa Cycling Club, the events were decided promptly and well up to schedule. Visitors and competitors were again pleased to meet the Chief, Mr T. S. Arcus. Pipe-Major Murdo McKenzie who won the North Island slow march piping championship, played a lament, “Mr Crimmon will Never Return,” in memory of the late Mr James Walker, who was a life-director of the society. An outstanding performance in the piping events was put up by Lawson Pither, who won the maiden piping contest, with 84 J points, and.,the B grade march with 89 points. He was also second in the Strathspeys and Reels, with 86 points. The North Island championship Highland Fling, for competitors of 16 years and over, was won by Miss June Scott, of Palmerston North. The commendably high standard noticeable in both the dancing and piping events was the subject of favourable comment by the judges, Miss Doris Shapleski, of Wellington (dancing) and Mr Jock McKenzie (piping). The athletic and cycling contests, attracted considerable interest. The crowd was on its toes with excitement, when witnessing the cycling events, in which there were some thrilling finishes. A good performance was put up by K. Woollett, secretary of the Wairarapa Cycling Club, in winning the one mile cycle championship. The society’s challenge cup (valued at 20gns) for the winner of the five mile cycle handicap went to J. Wilson. The New Zealand Empire Games representative, W. A. C. Pullar, won the one mile handicap in 4 min 24 sec, after taking the lead at the beginning of the last lap.. Although he soon got a good lead, R. Shaw, made a fine sprint up the straight, and was only a yard behind the winner at the tape. The president and director of the society wish to express their appreciation of the great assistance .given by the officials of the Masterton Amateur Athletic Club and of the Wairarapa Cycling Club.
