ROBBED AT PRAYER
THIEF TAKES HANDBAG. Sentence of two months' imprisonment in the second division was passed at Bow Street, London, on Walter Barclay, aged 59, for stealing a handbag from a seat in St Faith's Chapel, Westminster Abbey, while the owner was at prayer. It was stated that after missing her bag Miss Joan Louise Kiy, a Civil Servant, of Manor Park, followed Barclay out of the Abbey, and he was stopped by a verger. The bag was concealed under his overcoat.
Mr Lucien Fior. defending, pointed out that in the last few years Barclay had been the victim of a series of misfortunes. He had lost a fortune, and his wife, son, and daughter had died. He was now dependent on the earnings of his second wife as a charwoman.
