PETONE CENTENNIAL PROJECT. HALL & BATHING PAVILION; (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. It is understood that the work of erecting the centennial memorial on Petone Beach may be taken over from the Petone Borough Council by the Wellington Provincial Centennial LVlemorial Committee. This follows the decision of the committee ' to - make Petone Beach the site of the Wellington provincial memorial. The idea of a memorial hall and bathing pavilion on the site of the first Landing of the pioneers of the province was first conceived by the Petone Borough Council. The council then announced a competition for designs for the building, with prizes of £lOO and £25. One of the conditions was that the complete cost of erection should not exceed £6,500, but a 10 per cent margin was allowed, bringing the total permissible price to £7,150.
The winner of the contest, Mr Horace L. Massey, has given his quotation as £7,030, fees included, which is well within the 10 per cent margin allowed. Now that the Centennial Committee contemplates taking over the proposal, it is understood that Jhe committee ~is to spend £ 10,000 on the building. This will leave a margin of £2970 over Mr Massey’s quotation.
