CHRISTMAS PARTY. (“Times-Age" Special.) A Christmas party was tendered the Maori children of the Kohunui and Turanganui pahs on Wednesday evening by the Rev. J. Mann, of Martinborough, and his many friends in this district and in Martinborough. The function was a most enjoyable one, in fact as' one resident of long standing remarked it was the first time that such a treat had been given to Maori children during his residence in this district. The thoughtfulness and gracious act of Mr Mann was the subject of appreciative remarks. Toys of all description were given to the children by Father Christmas, each child being liberally provided for. During the evening songs and poi dances were given by the local children, while a piano-accordion solo was excellently plaved by Miss' Prior. Among those present were Mr and Mrs Drummond McMaster, Mr and Mrs Henry McMaster, Mrs D. Sutherland, Messrs Hardie (2), Misses Harvey (2) and many others. Mr J. Carter, on behalf of the Maoris, thanked Mr Mann and his friends and expressed the appreciation and gratitude of the Maoris for their kindly action. Mr Mann thanked Mr Carter for his remarks and expressed his pleasure in doing what he could for the Maori children. He especially thanked all those kind friends who came to his assistance and helped to make the evening a most enjoyable one. Personal Items. A church service conducted by (the Rev. J. Mann was held in the Burnside Church on Sunday. Mr Percy Halligan, of Matawhero, has returned from a visit to Wellington. Elders Allen and Handy are visiting this district prior to leaving for the French Pass, where they will spend the Christmas holidays. A conference of the Wairau branch at French Pass is also being held at Christmas. Mrs J. Pilmer and her children arrive on Thursday and will spend the holidays with her parents, Mr and Mrs Carter, Kohunui. Mrs Swan, Wellington, is staying with her daughter, Mrs Trevor Hume. Miss Baigent, Palmerston North, is the guest of Mrs Swanson, Lake Ferry. Mr Jas. Duggan is visiting Palmerston North for the wedding of his daughter to Mr Denis Broughton. Women’s Institute. At the final meeting of the year of the local branch of the Women’s Institute, the president (Miss Hanlon), presided over a large attendance : of members. It was decided to replace the tablet containing the names of Pirinoa and Lower Valley soldiers who enlisted during the Great War. The former tablet was destroyed when the hall was burnt down some years ago. It was decided to hold the Institute picnic in January. A competition for the best decorated vase was won by Miss Hanlon with Miss McKenzie second. A jumble competition of vegetable names was won by Miss Crosbie. The president extended to the members the best wishes for a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames D. Mclntosh, Smith, Apiar and Warren. _____
