Presenting the twenty-third annual report, the Principal (Mrs M. B. Thorppson, M.A.) said: —“This year has registered our' record roll-number, and with that an excellent health record, the latter a tribute to the vigilance, organisation and loving care of our Matron, Miss Young, to whom we are all grateful.” Having acknowledged in warm terms the good work done by the members of the staff and prefects, Mrs Thompson continued:—“The Old Girls continue to be a force and again leave us with a debt of gratitude. The association, guided by Mrs Avann, successfully carried through happy reunion functions. It made a further gift of £5 to the library which we owe to its activity and which, this year, has
been an inspiration and a retreat for the present girls. Gifts of seven chairs, embossed with the school monogram and engraved with the donor’s name, have been made to Ihe dining-room. The Napier-Hastings branch of the association has donated a picture, and two Old Girls a sports trophy in memory of Marie Hennah, an Old Girl whose loss we mourn. Two new branches have been formed at Dannevirke and Wanganui respectively. There are now seven branches in 'he North Island. The Wairarapa brand', under Ihe leadership of Mrs Eric Shaw helped greatly towards the success of the bazaar. We congratulate two Old Girls on outstanding University successes. Marjorie Pettit graduated M.A. with First Class Honours in Latin at Auckland University College, and Billie Armstrong, B.Sc. (N.Z.) has gained the Diploma of Entomology at London University, with commendation for her thesis and design. The tone of the school is safe in the keeping of most of the girls who have passed through it. “Prize-donors have again expressed in this tangible way their interest in our work, and we are indebted to several judges for their help in awarding trophies: Mr G. W. Morice, M.A., M.Sc. (essay), Mr R. C. Drummond (speech), Mr C. W. Kerry (music), Mrs K. McLeod (riding). We also thank Miss Donald for judging the lifesaving awards.” In reviewing in some detail the many-sided work of the school, Mrs Thompson spoke of the value of the new science laboratory and mentioned excellent progress in commercial instruction and in music. Last year the school entered well-prepared examination candidates, the majority of whom had four years in the secondary school and its results were excellent: —Higher leaving certificates, 12; University entrance and Medical preliminary, 7; University entrance, 5; school certificate (full or partial), 16; preliminary to Diploma of Fine Arts, 2; Associated Boards’ Practical Music Examinations, 1.1. Rudiments 6.
