FEATHERSTON

FAREWELL SOCIAL. MR & MRS H. MEREWOOD HONOURED. (“Times-Age” Special.) A very pleasant time was spent on Monday evening in Kaiwaiwai Hall, when the settlers of Kaiwaiwai and district tendered a farewell social to Mr and Mrs Henry Merewood, who have left the district to reside in Carterton. There were about 75 people present, and an enjoyable time was spent in euchre and dancing. Mr and Mrs Williams were the winners of the Monte Carlo. The card winners were as follows: —Ladies: Mrs A. Cook, 1; Mrs R. Fuge 2. Men: Mr R. Fenwick, 1; Mr B. Osborne, 2.

After supper, Mr R. Fuge, on behalf of the settlers, spoke of the regret felt at the departure of the guests of honour. They had been in the district for 28 years. Mr Merewood had always taken a keen interest in sport and the school for many years. He had been on the School Committee. Mr Fuge then asked Mr and Mrs Merewood to accept an eiderdown quilt and a handsome hearth rug together with the best wishes of all their friends in the' district. Mr Merewood suitably replied. The dance was very enjoyable, good music being supplied by Mr H. Boyd, of Greytown. The function concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Shearing and Haymaking. The farmers in this district have had wretched luck with their hay crops and shearing. Sheds that usually take from 3 to 4 days to complete shearing, have been occupied as many weeks. Haycrops that have been cut for over two weeks, have so far, owing to wet weather and high winds, not yet been harvested, and in many instances will be totally ruined. However, the prolific growth of grass will, to a certain extent compensate the farmer for this loss in hay crops. Boy Scouts. Invitations are out for a grand campfire entertainment which is to be given by the Scout troop on Thursday night. Given a fine night this should prove an enjoyable function.
