APPEAL TO PUBLIC

BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY’S WORK.

MOVE TO BUILD UP FUNDS.

“The society believes that its past performances and the generously given support of the public fully justifies it in making an appeal for financial assistance in order to enable it to carry out further improvements for the benefit of Masterton that will make this town a better place to live in," states a circular appeal issued by the Masterton Beautifying Society. “No appeal to the public has been made since 1929, and the time has now arrived when an effort must be made to build up the society’s funds if further work is to be carried out by it. The annual subscription for membership was fixed deliberately at a very low figure in order to make it possible for every member of the community to contribute and show his or her civic Subscriptions are as follow: — Life member, £5 ss; ordinary member (annual), 2s 6d; children under 17, Is; payable at the following addresses: — Mr H. M. A. Major, hon. treasurer (Messrs Major and Gooding, solicitors); Mr D. Fairbrother, seedsman and florist, Bannister Street; Yates’ Cash Stores —No. 2 shop (Daniell’s Buildings); No. 3 shop (opposite J. R. McKenzie’s). Donations above the subscription will be gratefully received.

The circular sets out the work already accomplished by the society, which includes the planting of ten miles of streets, the provision of 40 seats, improvements to South Park, Cole-Essex Street crossing. Waipoua River, Masterton Park, and the erection of the Allan Memorial Bridge, the total expenditure up to December, 1937. being £4803. The following proposals are under consideration as future activities: Further improvements to the Railway Station; the splaying back of street corners; Waipoua River planting scheme as a Centenary Memorial; an ornamental lake and coloured electric fountain in the old Waipoua River bed on completion of borough protective works; the holding of a carnival on February 11 next to augment finances. The circular bears the names of Dr. Archer Hosking, president, and Messrs A. W. Reynolds, hon. secretary, and H. M. A. Major, hon. treasurer.
