BUSH DISTRICT
SOME ATTRACTIVE RESERVES. PICTURESQUE MAKURI GORGE. z The road from Pahiatua to Makuri passes through a particularly beautiful gorge through which flows the Makuri Stream, which has a reputation among anglers as a stream that generally yields a good basket of trout. For about four miles the road winds along the bank of this gorge, which is clothed in native bush. The whole of the bush land is included in a scenic reservation. The township of Makuri is prettily situated just beyond the far end of the gorge (travelling from Pahiatua) and some miles further up the Valley, there is another attractive bush reserve around what is known as Perry’s Waterfall. On the hill over whicl\ the Coonoor-Pahiatua road passes there is a more extensive reservation of about 400 acres of forest. The township of Pongaroa also boasts the possession of a picturesque bush area on the outskirts of the town. This, too, is a scenic reserve. On the main State highway near the Konini Stream, adjoining the factory, is a small reserve on Pahiatua Hill, on which is said to be the legendary cave of Rongomai. ___
