FEATHERSTON

A CHRISTMAS PARTY. f ("Times-Age” Special.) The children from Pihautea and Pukio were given a Christmas party in the Pihautea Hall on Friday night. After tea the children played games and Father Christmas distributed sweets and fruit to the older children and toys to the younger ones. Mr G. Higginson sang, Trevor Smith played a pianoforte solo, and the Maori children sang songs in their native tongue. Mr H. Graham led the community singing and games. A Christmas cake guessing competition was won by Mrs H. Knapp. The adults enjoyed themselves in dancing.

Croquet Match. An intermediate Buttons match was played on the Haunui lawn between Martinborough and Haunui, which resulted in a win for the home club. Mrs Watson and Miss Nix (Haunui) beat Mesdames Evans and Skill (Martinborough), 26/4. Win fdr Featherston at Cricket. At Pihautea Featherston played Pihautea at cricket and won by 3 wickets and' 3 runs. scores were as follow:—Pihautea, first innings, 13; second innings, 67; total, 80. Featherston, first innings. 46; second innings, 37 for 8 wickets; total, 83. For Featherston Ritchie took 3 wickets for 2 runs, Davis 5 for 6 and Campbell 3 for 5. For Pihautea. Bargh took 2 wickets for no runs, Ness 3 for 6, and Smith 2 for 12. The best scores were McCalmont 20, Buck 20, A. R. Fuge 14, for Featherston, and Frew 24 for Pihautea. An Unusual Sight. A rather unusual phenomena was seen yesterday in the upper Tauherenikau River. After the heavy deluge on Sunday night the river was in flood in the morning. The water went down rapidly, and in the afternoon sand and dust clouds were seen flying before the high gale of wind from the river-bed, which a few hours before had been covered by several feet of water.
