CALVES AND LAMBS
SCHOOL COMPETITIONS CARTERTON GROUP. RESULTS OF JUDGING. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large assemblage of parents and the public at the Showgrounds, Carterton, yesterday afternoon when the judging of the Carterton group was held. The group consisted of the following schools: Cartertori, Gladstone, Waihakeke, Dalefield, Clareville, Taiatohi West, Longbush, Ponatahi, Parkvale. Great interest was taken in the contest this year as it was for a Challenge Cup donated by Messrs Borthwick and Sons, the conditions of which were that the cup could only be held from year to year by the successful school, but the winner is awarded a miniature cup. The competition was under the control of Mr Ewing of the school staff, Mr H. J. McKenzie, chairman of the Carterton. school committee, and an executive committee. Twenty-four calves of all breeds competed. The judge was Mr Jas Fisher and his awards gave every satisfaction. At the conclusion of the judging Mr Alan Fisher took the champion beast and another and demonstrated the difference between the animals. His demonstration was listened to with interest and he was applauded when he concluded his address.
The following is the result of the various competitions: —
Lambs. —Alton Wyeth 1, Sydney Bayliss 2, Geoffrey Grigson 3, Raeburn Abbott h.c.
Calves (rearing and handling).—June Williams 1, Doyle Gallon 2, Richard Williams 3, Bessie Wales h.c. Pedigree calves. —Keith Parker (Holstein) 1, Doyle Gallon 2, Betty Parker 3, Beryl James h.c. Grade dairy type.—June Williams 1, Richard Williams 2, Nola Humphries 3. Championship: six calves competed (SHolstein and 3 Jersey).—Keith Parker (Holstein) 1, June Williams (Jersey) 2, Richard Williams 3, Nola Humphries h.c. Yearling heifers, judged on handling, dairy type and condition. —Keith Parkei* 1, Ray Knowles 2, Lola Parker 3. Gladstone herd testing. —Brenda Morgan 1, Maureen Thomas 2. Mr C. L. Reynolds, president of the School Group, thanked Mr Jas Fisher for consenting to act as judge and said that he felt sure he had pleased everyone in his placings. He also wished to thaiik the parents for the keen interest displayed by them in the club’s affairs. He then called upon Mrs Jas Fisher to present the diplomas and prize money won by the successful competitors, which she did.
Mr H. J. McKenzie, chairman of the Carterton Committee thanked those present for the great interest displayed and announced that exhibits in each group would be judged in competition on Tuesday, December 13, when Mr H. W. Feast, of Ahiakouka, would be the judge.
