MEETING OF THE BOROUGH COUNCIL DEBIT IN DISTRICT FUND. BETTER HALL LIGHTING WANTED (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr J. W. Card, presided at the monthly meeting of the Featherston Borough Council, held last night. Others present were: Councillors J. S. Viles, W. Johnson, R. W.Watson, M. B. Tait, C. C. Kenwood, B. Donald, T. G. Hardie and C. R. Skippage. An apology for absence was received from Councillor H. W. Cundy. The financial statement showed that the District Fund was £135 9s in debit and- the following accounts were in credit: Cemetery, £l4 10s 4d; Domain, £32 14s lid; Mayor’s Relief Fund, £95 8s; Water Supply Loan, £1409 Is; Literary Institute, £4 14s 6d. Receipts since last meeting amounted to £257 10s 7d. Accounts amounting to £252 19s 5d were passed. Mr Card said it was a long time since the District Fund had been in debit. The position was due to the fact that the rates were so slow in coming in. A letter was received from the Department of Internal Affairs regarding regulations to prevent and minimise the occurrence of hydatid disease in dogs. The Featherston Amateur Swimming Club wrote drawing the attention of the council to unauthorised persons climbing the fence and using the baths out of hours. These persons, it was alleged, had stated that they had received permission to do so from prominent members of the council. The club wished to know what the council intended to do to prevent a recurrence of the trouble.
The position was explained by the and it was decided to advise the club that the trouble would not be repeated. A copy of its balance sheet was received from the Featherston Volunteer Fire Brigade. There was a credit balance of £3l Os sd. Matters in connection with the Road Safety Week were dealt with in a letter from the Commissioner of Transport. The Featherston Horticultural Society wrote stating that the lighting in Anzac Hall was insufficient for its shows and asking that the council provide improved lighting for future shows. At the last show, it was stated, some of the lights were so dim that some of the exhibits were almost unrecognisable. It was decided to look into the question of the lights in the hall. The Minister of Transport wrote asking the council to co-operate in keeping the number of town'carriers at a level that would enable them to give satisfactory service and at the same time obtain a reasonable standard of living and working conditions. The Mayor said the council had not received any applications for additional licences and the letter was received.
The Mayor reported that a visit had been paid to the town by Mrs R. S. Mclnness (secretary) and Mi’ W. A. Jamieson (a member) of the National Council set up under the Physical Welfare and Recreation' Act. Mr Card said it had been suggested that a committee be set up consisting of the Mayor, two members of the council and ,four citizens interested in all forms of sport. Six noted lady swimmers, he added, would visit Featherston in January or February to give an exhibition of swimming in the local baths. An expert swimming teacher would also visit the town about the same time. A national sports week would be held in the last week in February when it was hoped that sports of all kinds would be arranged. Councillors Kenwood and Hardie were appointed to the committee with tne Mayor. The committee was empowered to appoint the four members of the public. It was decided to finish the job of painting the whole of the bottom of the swimming baths. Plans were received of the subdivisions of land in Birdwood Street on which the State houses are to be erected.
The engineer, Mr H. F. Toogood, forwarded documents to be sealed for the contract for the laying of the Bin. water mains.
On the suggestion of Councillor Tait it was decided that the Works Committee inspect the roads in the borough with a view to carrying out maintenance repairs in the New Year. The Library Committee was authorised to effect improvements in the library.
The Mayor was appointed to attend the annual conference of the Municipal Association.
It was decided to erect the coloured lights in the streets during Christmas and New Year. The Mayor extended the season’s greetings to councillors. SCOUTS AND CUBS. Mr N. C. C. Shepherd, District Commissioner, and the officers of the Cub Pack and Scout Troop with sixteen Scouts and twelve Cubs will attend the Scout rally in Eketahuna on Saturday. The Featherston troop has held rhe Beetham Shield for the last two years, and will compete in the following sections; —Ambulance, tent pitching, trestle building, knot-tying, water-boiling, Scout pace and signalling. Bowling. The annual visit of the Victoria Club to Featherston will take place next Thursday, when the visitors will bring four or five rinks. The following teams are to play against Greytown on Saturday in the Booth Cup and Shield competitions: — Booth Cup: At home —Kilsby, Card. James, Rolls (s); Lipinski, Ayre, W. Higgison, Bloxam (s). At Greytown: Murray, Anderson, O’Neale, Deas (s); Davis, Willett, Hyland, Smith (s). Shield: Roxburgh, Karaitiana, Fuge, J. Higgison (s). Playing at Martinborough in the progressive pairs tournament by electric light, Mr H. Rolls secured the skip’s prize, winning all five games. Shooting.
On Saturday the following two teams will go to Papawai to compete for the McLeod Shield: —No. 1 team: L. G. Benton. K. McKenzie C J. Nix, F. S. Hood, W. Johnston, J. Johnston, R. Donald; No. 2 team, W. S. Benton. A. Cook, W. Nix, I. Feast, A. H Ashdown, W. J. McGill, N. C. C. Shepherd. Emergencies: N. Nix, A. Turner, B. Devenport. Croquet. In a croquet match between Haunui and Martinborough each team won a doubles apd in the singles each team won two games.
Personal. Miss B. Currie left today for Wellington, where she will be the guest of her sister. Matriculation Examination. There w*ere six candidates for the Matriculation examination. The final subjects were taken this afternoon. The Rev. R. S. Keenan acted as supervisor.
