WAIRARAPA COMPETITION MATCHES KEEN PLAY ON SATURDAY. MASTERTON BEAT MEMORIAL. The Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association's inter-club competition matches were continued in all grades on Saturday. The weather was fine and some keen and interesting matches were witnessed. Owing to heavy rain on Friday night the A grade match between Carterton and Martinborough was abandoned, the green keepers being unable to prepare the courts for play. Practice matches were played at Carterton. A GRADE. Playing in a Gawith Shield, match at the Masterton courts, Masterton defeated Memorial by 20 matches, 12 sets and 240 games to '4 matches, 9 sets and 119 games. The Masterton ladies played particularly well and went through without dropping a match. Following are the detail results, Masterton players mentioned first in every case:— Men's singles: Hawksworth beat Leete, 6/0,6/0; Hodder beat Andrew, 6/3, 6/3; Payton lost to Boyes, 6/2, 5/6, 4/6; Faulknor beat Person, 6/4, 6/2; O’Connor beat Carrig, 4/6, 6/3, 7/5; Ward lost to Marsack, 6/4, 3/6, 1/6. Ladies’ singles: Miss Milne beat Miss Bradley, 9/4; Mrs Hawksworth beat Miss Kilminster, 9/5; Mrs Ward beat Miss Taylor, 9/2; Miss Betts beat Miss Percy, 9/3; Miss Allan beat Mrs Connolly, 9/5; Miss B. Payton beat Mrs Person, 9/5. Men’s doubles: Payton and Hodder lost to Leet and Andrew, 5/6, 5/6; O’Connor and Faulknor lost to Person and Boys, 4/6, 1/6; Hawksworth and Ward beat Carrig and Marsack. 6/1, 6/0. Ladies’ doubles: Mrs Hawksworth and Miss Betts beat Misses Bradley and Taylor. 9/5; Misses Allan and Milne beat Misses Kilminster and Percy, 9/6; Mrs Ward and Miss Payton beat Mesdames Connolly and Person, 9/3. Combined doubles: Miss Betts ana Hawksworth beat Miss Bradley and Boyes, 9/1; Mrs Hawksworth and Hodder beat Miss Kilminster and Andrew, 9/5; Miss Milne and Faulknor beat Miss Percy and Leete, 9/8; Mrs Ward and Payton beat Mrs Person and Persqn, 9/3; Miss Allan and O’Connor beat Miss Taylor and Carrig, 9/3; Miss Payton and Ward beat Mrs Connolly and Marsack, 9/6. B GRADE. The B grade contest between Memorial and Lansdowne, played at the Memorial courts resulted in an overwhelming win for Memorial by 23 matches to 1. Watson beat Miss B. Percy, 8/2; Miss D. O’Donnell beat Miss Welch, 8/1; Mrs Hurley beat Miss Butler, 8/2; Miss M. Rayne beat Miss Joyce, 8/1; Miss E. Wickens beat Miss McFarlane, 8/4; Miss U: Holtham beat Miss Matthews, 8/5. Other sections resulted: Men’s doubles, Memorial 2 matches, Lansdowne nil. Ladies’ doubles, Memorial 2 matches, Lansdowne 1. Combined doubles, Memorial 6 matches, Lansdowne nil. A B grade match set down to be played on the Carrington Park courts, Carterton, between Carrington Park and Masterton Park was postponed on account of the courts being too wet for play. In a B grade contest played at Kuripuni, Mt Bruce defeated Kuripuni by 13 matches to 11. C GRADE. Memorial defeated Martinborough on the Martinborough courts by 15 matches to 9. The section results were as follow: — Men’s singles: Memorial 5 matches, Martinborough J match. Ladies singles: Memorial 1 match, Martinborough 5. matches. Men’s doubles: Memorial 3 matches, Martinborough 0 matches. Ladies’ doubles: Memorial 1 match, Martinborough 2 matches. Combined doubles: Memorial 5 matches, Martinborough 1 match. Masterton Park won by default from Carterton.
The Kopuaranga-Kuripuni C grade match was not played.
