The Local Bodies’ Officers’ Dispute was settled by conciliation on November 2. No adjustments in salary or working conditions are called for. The award remains in force until January 31, 1940. The dog tax was fixed at 2s 6d per dog. A new procedure is to be adopted this year with a view to treating dogs for the prevention of hydatid disease. Supplies of the remedy, known as arecoline hydro-bromide, will be forwarded to the Council for sale to dog owners. The cost to the Council will be 9d per packet and the sale price is Is per packet, each packet containing sufficientremedy for one dog for the year. Regulations have been issued making it compulsory for each owner to purchase his supplies when registering his dogs. Instructions for use will be supplied with the remedy. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote asking the Council to co-oper-ate in forming a district committee in connection with the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act.—The clerk stated that he had been advised that two members of the Physical and Recreation Council would be in Eketahuna on Wednesday morning next for the purpose of conferring with representatives of local bodies in the matter. It was decided that the chairman and clerk attend the meeting.
It was decided to write to the Department of Agriculture pointing out that more effective action was necessary in connection with noxious weeds in the county. In connection with work during the month in the Alfredton riding the engineer reported as follows. —On the Castle Hill Road a further groyne has been put in at Price’s. A timber shute has been put in at the mouth of a culvert on Wingate’s Road in order to carry the water over some very weak country. The Poris Road is being tidied up and water tables, etc., cleared, but as usual there is a very luxuriant growth of grass on the road. On Saunders Road a track has been opened up through to Owendale. Early in the new year it is hoped to very largely clean out the big slips so as to try to improve the position for next winter. The upper truss bridge in the Waihoki Valley Road has been re-decked and several of the cross joists renewed. It is hoped to make a start shortly on the breakaway on Leach’s Road and repairs to the culvert outlet on Savage’s Road.
The engineer reported as follows concerning operations on No 62 Main Highway.—Satisfactory progress has been made with Pleckville Bridge. The' western abutment and the two piers are complete and the contractor hopes to have the beams and deck concreted before the ehd of the year. The con-
tractor for the Tawataia section has not yet made a start with the work, but I understand that he intends to shift his plant on to the job next week and to make a start with draining and culverting. The usual maintenance work has been carried out and the slips in the Rongomai Gorge have been cut back.
