WOMEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE. ACTIVITIES IN DISTRICT. The last monthly meeting for 1938 of the Women’s National Welfare League was held at the Midland Hotel yesterday. Those present were: Miss Kummer (in the chair), Mesdames H. E. Pither, R. C. Drummond, S. Fletcher, F. Garland, H. P. Harrison, E. J. Coleman, H. Brisco, S. Coradine, A. Andrew, A. W. McKenzie, L. Hunter, R. Whyborn, Latimer, J. Caselberg, S. L. P. Free, H. T. Wood, W. G. Scott, A. E. Kilgour and Miss M. Boddington. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames T. Jordan. G. H. Collie, S. J. Munn, S. Mills, W. McKenzie, G. G. Tolhurst and Misses C. and M. Cameron. A letter was received from Mr. Norman Lee, secretary-manager of the Wairarapa Hospital Board, expressing thanks for visits paid to the Buchanan Home during the year.

Miss Kummer (president) reported that the sum of £ 2 4s had been collected towards furnishings for the Women’s Rest Room and more would be sent in during the month. Mrs. Tolhurst reported that two visits were paid to the hospital during November. Fruit, flowers, reading matter and teas had been distributed to the T.B. ward and Ward 7. The visitors for January are Mesdames Fletcher, Drunimond, Latimer and Kilgour. ' It was decided to purchase a game for the use of the crippled boys in the hospital. Mrs. H. E. Pither donated a table for the game to be played on. Mrs. McKenzie reported having interviewed two cases in the social welfare work, groceries and clothing having been supplied to these cases. Mrs. Pither reported that orders were being sent forward to the Blind Institute. Orders to hand were six baskets, 1 stool and 1 nursery basket. Mrs. Pither also spoke of a young patient who had just died in the Institute, one from whom they could all take a lesson' from her life.

Mesdames Drummond and Kilgour will visit the hospital on Christmas Eve and distribute gifts, and Mrs. Munn will visit the Buchanan Home on Christmas Day. > The League’s Christmas visit to the Buchanan Home will be made on December 8. The cars, visitors and programme are to be arranged by the convenor, Mrs. S. J. Munn. ’ Mrs H. P. Harrison spoke on the aims and object of the Red Cross work and appealed for members to join up in this work. The membership fee was 2s 6d. During the tea interval, the president and executive members were presented with posies and shoulder sprays and accorded musical honours. Miss Kummer thanked all members foi; their generous help during 1938 and wished all the compliments of the season. The League will now go into recess until March 3, 1939.
