LABOURER ROBBED
, BY CONFIDENCE TRICK. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, November 30. A confidence trick was successfully worked on a farm labourer named Denis Nolan, who was relieved of £l2O by Maurice O’Connor, aged 34, who pleaded guilty in the S.M. Court today to two charges of false pretences. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. In evidence, Nolan said that he came from Christchurch to attend the Forbury Park trotting meeting. Accused accosted him outside a hotel, saying that they had met in Christchurch. Accused said he was Maurice Holmes, racehorse owner and trainer of Royal Romance, which he was to drive at Forbury. He was also going to drive another horse, and was sure of a double. Witness gave him. £5 for this double and later, on an assurance that it would mean thousands, he drew £ll5 from the savings bank, and paid it over to accused. Clarence Rae Caffin, secretary of the trotting club, said in evidence that Royal Romance was not nominated for either day. The police disclosed that they found £25 in accused's possession. This had been handed back to Nolan.
